Course Description
**Take this course along with the partner course Effective Treatment Planning for Dysphagia: From the Bedside to the MBS for a discounted price (up to $55.00 discount per person)!
Dysphagia evaluations and treatment have evolved beyond simple bedside evaluations, compensatory strategies and diet modifications. This intermediate level course for SLPs and OTs presents a structured approach to evaluating and treating dysphagia based on neuro-physiological processes. Emphasis on kinesiology takes a front row seat in the diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia. As clinicians, our working understanding of form and function of this swallow system becomes the foundation of our decision making process in both the evaluation and treatment process; the more we understand this system, the better the outcomes for our patients. This course reviews the impact of pressure regulation, hyolaryngeal excursion, pharyngeal stripping waye, the role of the UES and the involvement of type I vs type II muscle fibers. In addition, the esophageal phase of the swallow is examined and discussed as to its importance and impact on the overall system. This course shows the therapist how to take the treatment approach from that of a Symptom approach to a System approach. Exercises, Research Diet Modification and Progression and outcome tracking will all be discussed. The treatment approaches discussed in this course represent the future in the field of dysphagia as a more measurable diagnostic process.
NOTE: attendees must have a strong knowledge of anatomy/physiology prior to course.
Instructor(s)
Mary Nylin, MA, CCC-SLP (Developer); Jennifer Carter, M.Ed, CCC-SLP (Instructor); Charissa Moore, MA, CCC-SLP (Instructor)
Mary Nylin, MA, CCC-SLPis a Speech-Language Pathologist currently instructing dysphagia therapists throughout the USA. Mary has been instrumental in developing a Dysphagia program in outpatient and inpatient departments and was involved in developing the speech department of Pediatric Rehab facilities. Currently, Mary is the Senior Clinical Specialist in the VitalStim division at Empi. In her role as Clinical Specialist, she spends her time speaking to physician groups, administrators, and Speech-Language Pathologists on Dysphagia management and the implementation of NMES into Dysphagia therapy. Mary also fields clinical questions from therapists around the country.
Jennifer Carter, M.Ed, CCC-SLP has been evaluating and treating adults with dysphagia for almost 2 decades. She is the owner/senior clinician at the Carter Swallowing Center, a private practice specializing in dysphagia in Denver, CO. Jen is also a consulting clinical dysphagia specialist for Empi/DJO and has provided instruction to hundreds of clinicians on such therapies as electrical stimulation and surface EMG biofeedback. She is a frequent speaker on dysphagia at local, state, and national conferences, and her certifications include VitalStim® Therapy and the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP).
Charissa H. Moore, MA, CCC-SLP, MA, CCC-SLP, received her Masters Degree in Communication Disorders from Appalachian State University. Charissa is currently self-employed as a clinical consultant. She provides clinical services, support and education in a variety of settings with an emphasis on dysphagia treatment and the implementation of appropriate modalities. Charissa is one of a select few Certified VitalStim Instructors. She has taught courses in dysphagia and MBS interpretation. She previously worked at First Health of the Carolinas Hospital as the Rehabilitation Director. There she was instrumental in developing a continuum of care for pediatrics and adults with dysphagia, including a hospital-based Esophageal Clinic. She serves as a knowledgeable resource in dysphagia to therapists around the country.
