Course Description

"PRE-RECORDED EVENT (Self-Study)
This course offers the practicing clinician an opportunity to gain new knowledge and update existing skills in the area of application of therapeutic ultrasound. Participants will learn a research based approach to the dosing and application of therapeutic ultrasound. This course has been specifically designed to have immediate clinical applications. Participants will leave the course with a clinical model that will guide them in selecting parameters that yield more predictable thermal and non-thermal responses in human tissue. The model is based on the stage of tissue healing, the depth and composition of the target tissue, and heating rate calculations from the existing therapeutic ultrasound research. This approach will assist the clinician in answering important questions such as; what frequency, intensity, duty cycle, and treatment time should be selected to create the desired therapeutic outcome.

Course Requirements:
  • Computer with internet and working speakers/sound are required for this course.
  • Course must be completed within 30 days of activation (activate course within 6 months of purchase).
  • An online multiple-choice quiz (80% passing score) and submission of an online evaluation form are required for successful completion.
  • A certificate of completion will be available to print immediately after course is successfully completed.

AOTA Classification Codes
Domain of OT: Context and Environment

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Review essential terminology and principles related to ultrasound therapy.
  • Apply a clinical model for dosing therapeutic ultrasound based on the stage of tissue healing and desired therapeutic outcome.
  • Provide a brief review of clinically relevant research that will guide participants in selecting parameters of treatment that yield more predictable thermal and non-thermal responses in human tissue
  • Identify common myths and errors in parameter selection and application of ultrasound therapy
  • Discuss indications and contraindications of therapeutic ultrasound
  • Compare and contrast the ability of different phonophoresis media to transmit ultrasound
