Course Description

Part 1 - Fundamentals of Electrical Stimulation
There is scientific evidence to support the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) for the management of muscle wasting. What is a biphasic and balanced electrical pulse? Which current waveforms should I used? What's the difference between the ON:OFF ratio and the duty cycle? Why is pulse frequency setting so important? In this first video, the speaker will present the fundamentals of NMES. He will define, outline, and explain the terminology as well as the technical, dosimetric, and application parameters related to the delivery of safe and effective therapeutic applications of neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

Part 2 - Fundamentals of Neuromuscular System
NMES is indicated for the management of muscle wasting resulting from a variety of conditions such as disuse, immobilization, myopathy, neuropathy, dystrophy and sarcopenia. What is the process of electrically evoked motor unit activation? What is the difference between muscle atrophy, hypertrophy, and hyperplasia? During this video, the speaker will present the physiological foundation of NMES. He will outline, define and explain the key neuromuscular structures and physiological processes underlying the production of an electrically evoked muscle contraction aimed at preventing, minimizing and overcoming muscle wasting.

Alain-Yvan Belanger

Alain-Yvan Belanger, BSc, MSc, PhD, PT is now a retired Professor from the Department of Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy program, Faculty of Medicine, Laval University, Quebec City, Canada. Dr. Belanger holds a bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy from University of Montreal, a master of science degree in Kinesiology from Simon Fraser University, and a doctoral degree in Neurosciences from McMaster University. As a physical therapist, he had the privilege to work at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic Games.

His record of scholarship includes over 150 publications. He is the solo author of three textbooks entitled Evidence-Based Guide to Therapeutic Physical Agents, and Therapeutic Electrophysical Agents: Evidence Behind Practice, 2nd and 3rd editions. Dr Belanger was awarded the Prix d'Excellence, by the Quebec Physiotherapists Licensing Board, for his book titled Evidence-Based Guide to Therapeutic Physical Agents. The second edition of Therapeutic Electrophysical Agents: Evidence Behind Practice has been translated in Portuguese. Dr. Belanger is the founder and President of Physiometrix Ltd., from where he now works as an author and consultant in the field of therapeutic electrophysical agents.

He has extensive experience as a teacher, researcher, consultant and author in the field of human neuromuscular physiology and therapeutic electrophysical agents. Dr. Belanger has held the positions of Scientific Editor of the journal Physiotherapy Canada and President of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. He also served as Associate Editor in several journals. He has delivered multiple conferences at various national and international congresses. He has given continuing courses in the field of therapeutic electrophysical agents to Canadian and American physical therapists.
