Course Description

This course will provide speech pathologists with in-depth information of what they need to know about the esophagus and esophageal disorders when working with patients who have oropharyngeal dysphagia. The course includes a thorough review of esophageal anatomy, common tools used to assess the esophagus, the pathophysiology of motility and structural esophageal disorders and how these disorders can affect pharyngeal swallowing, and the treatments most commonly used by physicians to treat esophageal disorders. Videos of barium swallow study videos demonstrating the different disorders are included as well as a review of what to look for during modified barium swallow study to differentiate pharyngeal and esophageal dysfunction. The course concludes with case studies and practical suggestions of how speech pathologists can use the information presented to be active participants in the care of patients with esophageal disorders.

Course Requirements:
  • Computer with internet and working speakers/sound are required for this course.
  • Course must be completed within 30 days of activation (activate course within 6 months of purchase).
  • An online multiple-choice quiz (80% passing score) and submission of an online evaluation form are required for successful completion.
  • A certificate of completion will be available to print immediately after course is successfully completed.
  • SLPs - ASHA CEUs may be obtained by completing the online ASHA form and checking the "Report to ASHA" box.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the role of the SLP in the management of esophageal disorders
  • Describe esophageal anatomy and physiology
  • Differentiate the nature and purpose of common assessment tools for the esophagus
  • Discuss the pathophysiology of esophageal disorders and how these disorders are diagnosed and treated.
  • Recognize age related esophageal disorders in pediatrics and the elderly
  • Appropriately manage patients with esophageal disorders

Jen Carter

M.Ed. CCC-SLP, BCS-S

Jen is a medically-based speech pathologist with 24 years of experience evaluating and treating dysphagia and is a board certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders. She currently lives in Denver and has a private practice, the Carter Swallowing Center, solely focused on dysphagia. She frequently presents at the local, state, and national level on the topic of swallowing treatment. When she’s not working, Jen enjoys hiking and backpacking in Colorado.
