Sensory Point Taping for Pediatric Oral Motor Function: Kinesio Medical Taping
On average, 80% of children identified with developmental delay suffer from oral motor dysfunction. This two-day pediatric sensory point taping (SPT) course focuses on smaller taping applications on strategic points to impact oral motor function. The SPT techniques address the co-morbidities surrounding oral motor dysfunction, including arthrokinematics, respiration, motility, oral motor coordination, jaw alignment, head posture, edema, pain, fascial restrictions, and scar tissue while maintaining skin integrity and providing comfort. The participant will be introduced to assessment methods, including musculoskeletal data collection for pre/post assessment and skills specific for successful, safe application of elastic therapeutic tape.
Disclosure: this course will discuss KinesioTape® and the Sensory Point Taping technique. No other similar product or technique will be discussed
(*Weatherford, TX, and Orlando, FL, attendees please scroll down for more information)
Benefits of Attending:
- Apply sensory point tapings across patient problems (edema, pain, drooling, oral motor dyscoordination, open mouth posture, poor respiration, facial reanimation, soft tissue restrictions, balance deficits, and alignment) to improve function
- Discuss tests and measures to assess for underlying conditions or co-morbidities of diagnoses related to oral motor and postural dysfunction
- Use evidence-based taping strategies to increase alignment, oral motor function, and postural control
- Hands-on labs to engage in oral motor, postural, and scar assessment and treatment
Lab Notice: Please dress in lab-appropriate clothing. We will be discussing and practicing each evaluation and treatment technique. Day 1 comprises head and neck applications; Day 2 continues to whole body applications.
Course Goal: Participants will understand the relationship between the skin and body systems and how Kinesio tape® can be applied to the pediatric population to encourage oral motor control while ensuring safety. (Day 1 SPT techniques for head and neck. Day 2 expands SPT to whole body concepts.)
