Understanding Dementia
"PRE-RECORDED EVENT (Self-Study)An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's Disease. It is the leading cause of institutionalization of older Americans and is a growing challenge to health care providers. This learning experience provides an overview of Alzheimers Disease and other irreversible and reversible causes of dementia. Participants will learn how to recognize warning signs and symptoms, and recognize the stages of Alzheimers Disease. The course will outline dementia-related communication deficits and provide practical strategies for improving communication with the impaired client. Participants will gain understanding of behavioral symptoms and triggers and learn about interventions that may be effective in reducing behavioral symptoms.This course has been designed to have immediate practical application. The learning experience will provide insight into understanding and interacting with Alzheimers and related-dementia clients.

Course Requirements:
- Computer with internet and working speakers/sound are required for this course.
- Course must be completed within 30 days of activation (activate course within 6 months of purchase).
- An online multiple-choice quiz (80% passing score) and submission of an online evaluation form are required for successful completion.
- A certificate of completion will be available to print immediately after course is successfully completed.
- SLPs - ASHA CEUs may be obtained by completing the online ASHA form and checking the "Report to ASHA" box.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the distinction between dementia syndrome and Alzheimers Disease
- Identify reversible and irreversible causes of dementia
- List communication deficits in dementia disorders
- Discuss strategies for effective communication in each stage of dementia
- Identify common triggers resulting in behavioral challenges
- Describe primary, secondary, and peripheral psychiatric or behavioral symptoms of dementia
- Discuss interventions that may be effective in reducing behavioral challenges

Jeanne Demory Post, MSW, PSW is the Clinical Coordinator and Medical Social Worker for a memory disorder clinic. She serves on the State of Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative Nursing Home Committee for Behavior Management and is certified by the University of South Florida Training Academy on Aging to teach the state-mandated Department of Elder Affairs Nursing Home Alzheimers Disease Training and ALF Level I and II Alzheimer’s Disease Training. She has extensive experience in compassionately and successfully counseling geriatric patients, their families, and caregivers. Jeanne’s background includes providing social work services to hospice patients and their families and coordinating educational seminars for Lifespring, Inc., a nationally-recognized training company. Jeanne is an exceptional instructor who has taught over 100 courses across the country to healthcare professionals and caregivers on topics such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Reducing Stress and Burn-out, and Professional Boundaries. “Jeanne Post is by far the most gifted training facilitator I have ever had the pleasure of hearing,” says one training participant.
