Treating and Managing Dysphagia with Dementia I

Treating and Managing Dysphagia with Dementia is a two part series for physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists. Each part may be taken independently. This series focuses on the variables associated with cognitively impaired patients, dysphagia instruction and memory functions necessary for learning and dysphagia stimulation programming.
Part 2 describes dysphagia management therapy based on the patients diagnosis, stage and memory difficulties. Specific therapeutic approaches will be described in detail and will be combined with examples of treatment for dysphagia. In addition, specific disorders such as Alzheimers, frontotemporal dementia, picks disease, vascular dementia, Parkinsons and Huntingtons disease will be highlighted. Each of these specific diseases will include a description of the prominent dysphagia symptoms associated with that disease as well as recommended therapeutic strategies for dysphagia management. There will also be a discussion of neurotransmitters, medications affecting dysphagia, risk factors, feeding dependency, normal brain aging, medications affecting memory and vitamins/nutrients and herbs influencing dementia.

Peter Johnson

Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Peter R Johnson, PhD, CCC-SLP received his undergraduate degree in speech language pathology from Northern Illinois University. He received his MS and PhD in speech language pathology from the University of Pittsburgh. He also received an Executive Graduate Degree in Healthcare Financial Management from Ohio State University. Dr. Johnson has worked in acute care hospitals, home care, outpatient clinics, and long-term care. He has written numerous articles in speech language pathology. Dr. Johnson served as Column Editor for the American Speech Language Hearing Association Special Interest Division 11 and 13. He has co-authored several books and several chapters in the field of speech language pathology. His latest book is the Clinician’s Guide to the Successful Evaluation and Treatment of Dementia. Other books include Drugs and Dysphagia and Practical Pharmacology in Rehabilitation. He served on the Executive Board of the Florida Association of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists for eight years. Dr. Johnson was four times the recipient of the President’s Award as well as the Outstanding Service Award from the Florida Association of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists. He currently serves as Chair for the Florida Department of Health Licensing Board of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
