Shockingly Powerful: Electrotherapy for Strength Training

This introductory level course offers clinicians utilizing electrotherapy with knowledge to maximize treatment outcomes from the use of electrotherapy in the rehabilitation of patients with muscle weakness. The presentation of muscle weakness and disuse atrophy will be discussed and model will be presented to address this weakness with the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). The use of electrotherapy and surface EMG as a biofeedback tool to facilitate functional recovery in the stroke patient will also be discussed. Specific electrotherapy protocols will be discussed, including the choice of best waveform, best waveform parameters and best practices on how to incorporate electrotherapy in the treatment session.

Yorick Wijting

Yorick received his Physical Therapy degree in the Netherlands and his DPT at the University of St. Augustine, Florida. He has extensive training and practical experience in biophysical agents and teaches nationally and internationally to medical professionals on their therapeutic use. Yorick has been instrumental in developing the use of electrical stimulation by Speech Language Pathologists in the treatment of dysphagia. Yorick currently lives in California and runs his private practice in Gilroy, CA.
