Restraint Reduction
The 1987 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act initiated nursing home regulation. Skilled nursing facilities must comply with all regulations or they risk fines, poor state survey ratings and even closure. One arena in which nursing homes are utilizing therapists to meet the federal regulations is in restraint reduction. In moving towards a restraint free environment, the best approach utilizes a multidisciplinary Restraint Reduction Committee. Therapists play a unique role on the committee by assessing patients for balance and ambulation deficits, positioning issues, wound care and prevention and contracture management. Therapists are often asked to provide alternative positioning devices in lieu of restraints to promote safety. The committee implements trials of alternatives to restraints and a systematic process of restraint reduction is achieved.Course Requirements:

Lee Wood
Lee Wood, MS, OTR/L – Lee earned her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the Medical University of South Carolina. She earned her Master of Science degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Oklahoma. Lee has spent 14 years in long term care, as a Director of Therapy and as a Regional Occupational Therapy Director with several companies. She has provided nursing and therapy instruction in the areas of restraints, positioning and contracture management. Lee has implemented restraint reduction programs in skilled nursing facilities in three states. Lee has lectured at the AOTA on dysphagia. Lee has lectured on restraints and positioning at the Alabama Occupational Therapy Association Conference, the Alabama Physical Therapy Association Conference and the Great Southern Occupational Therapy Conference.
