Connections Between Speech Sound Production and Literacy

This course is provided by BYU with CIAO Seminars as the ASHA Approved Provider.

This course will discuss the role of phonological representations as they relate to the development of both speech sound production and literacy skills. The course will focus on improving clinicians' ability to identify risk factors for literacy disorders in children who have speech sound production difficulties. Discussion will include appropriate assessment tools to consider and how to incorporate orthography into speech sound treatment. The benefit of this overall course is to help clinicians see the overlap between speech sound production and literacy and to identify appropriate roles for assessment and treatment.

Kelly Farquharson

Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Kelly Farquharson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is an SLP, an assistant professor, and director of the Children Literacy and Speech Sound Lab at Emerson College in Boston, MA. Her research interests include school-aged children with phonological and language disorders, the effect of those disorders on the acquisition of literacy skills, and the cognitive, environmental, and academic factors that contribute to phonological and language disorders. Her work is published in the American Journal of Speech Language Pathology, the Journal of Speech Language and Hearing Research, Journal of Communication Disorders, and the International Journal of Speech Language Pathology, among others. She is currently serving as the Past President of the Massachusetts Speech Language Hearing Association. Prior to pursuing a research degree, she was a school-based SLP in Pennsylvania.
