Course Description

Evaluation and treatment of cognitive deficits can often be some of the most challenging diagnoses to address because of what seems to be infinite variables. This course focuses on the many factors associated with learning for the cognitively impaired patients who suffer from head injuries, stroke and dementia. Fundamental information includes anatomy and physiology of cognition, clinical neurotransmitters that affect cognition, different types of memory, medications that affect cognition and evidence-based practice access. The instructor will also address cognitive evaluations, goal writing, environmental adaptations, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and the MCI training program. Specific direct cognitive interventions to improve attention, memory, executive function, and visual-spatial functions will be discussed in detail. The importance of correct diagnosis and staging will be emphasized along with staging training. This course, taught by one of the great experts in the field, will help you to narrow your plan to deliver the best patient-specific cognitive rehabilitation care.

"Thanks for the presentation. Very relevant topic for OT!"

"Excellent course! Great presenter I will use 90% of this is actual diagnosis and treatment. Terrific slides and manual. I will however state that I attended literally 100% of this course, took notes and screenshots, followed along with every slide...but the test was difficult for me due to the word king of several questions. I also felt it was difficult to find some answers in the course manual. I am an excellent test taker and had trouble with this test. I would love more courses in goals, documentation, Drugs and dysphagia/cognition, ethics. More live stream courses!!! Live stream is done very well through ciao. I prefer ciao over other companies even though this California girl has to wake up so early to do the course haha. "

"I wish that some of the cognitive programs were less expensive. Rarely are we given a budget for SLP tx materials. I do use constant therapy as it is free for therapists but I feel it needs a lot of work before it will be great. RehaCom seems fantastic but can't afford to lease myself and company will not help."

"Dr. J was great! His knowledge base was impressive, and his use of real life examples proved relatable, allowing for improved understanding regarding topics discussed during today's class. "

"This was a very good course. The review of anatomy and neurotransmitter is always good no matter how many times I might have heard it before. I loved all the practical therapy ideas! That is one area that is so often left to the end of courses and the speakers run out of time. I did not feel that way at all this time! (Thank you!) My co-worker and I are excited to go back to work on Monday with some great ideas to take to our supervisor (computer programs in particular). I do feel that the pre-conference info did not indicate that so much of it would be related to dementia as I work with TBI. But that being said, I learned a lot of good information that can certainly be adapted and utilized in my setting and it doesn't hurt to learn something out of my usual body of knowledge. Thank you to Dr. Johnson and CIAO for a great educational opportunity!"

"I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. It gave me a good overview as well as specifics regarding assessment and treatment of cognitively impaired patients, as I have been in practice for 40 years--starting out initially with aphasia and neuro patients and now treating dysphagia primarily in my nursing home environments. In the past, I was familiar with on-line treatments such as Psychological Software, which I used in the 1980's, so this shows other, more current activities. I also appreciated Dr. Johnson's comments re: their strengths and weaknesses. I do understand the benefits of these computer treatments, absolutely. I would also have liked his sharing non-computer activities. Given budget constraints at my facilities, I tend to use low-tech treatments and a few more references for these would have been great. I likely will order some of the books he suggested. Thanks for a great conference! "

"Possibly provide an online/computer based cognitive program that would be more reasonable for a therapist to personally purchase as the ones described were over one thousand dollars. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2019

"I had expected more information on evidence based treatments for specific stages of dementia but will delve into the websites offered. I like the GDS information. I had difficulty with following the slides/outline at times, such as Metacognition (is it a treatment modality and where it fit in with MCI). I enjoyed Peter's examples and stories; thought the demonstration of Rehacom was overdone."

"I love the intent the presenter has with providing better memory care units and education to those working in the field. Presenter was a little hard to follow at times and I had a hard time understanding what he was talking about sometimes. A little confusing. But overall, enjoyed it and learned from it. Thanks!"

"I was very happy with the fact that this course provided functional, therapeutic activities. Often these conferences spend to much time at the beginning running out of time for the functional pieces therapists can use. Thank you!"

"I think the course could be improved by including more case studies. I also appreciate it when lecturers do not just feed you information to memorize but rather have you think for yourself and then provide feedback. Some parts of the course were more interactive, which I appreciated. I do think the course was well-organized and that the presenter's slides contained just the right amount of information."
