Course Description

This course assumes a prior knowledge of dysphagia and anatomy/physiology of the head and neck. For an excellent review, we recommend bundling the ecourse Anatomy of Swallowing. You will find an option for a discounted bundle during checkout. VitalStim Providers and past attendees of John Kelly’s Myofascial Release and Other Manual Techniques in Dysphagia Management course may have already completed Anatomy of Swallowing (not sure?.., just ask CIAO).

Elastic taping techniques have gained the attention of rehab providers offering support while allowing functional movement. This research-based modality has a variety of applications to address functional impairment. This course will focus on taping strategies relevant to dysphagia therapy. Therapeutic applications provide re-education of the neuromuscular system, influence lymphatic drainage, improve localized circulation and reduce pain. Diagnoses familiar to the dysphagia specialist benefit from its use. Taping strategies offer muscular inhibition as in craniomandibular hypertonus, muscular recruitment facilitating hyoid movement and minimize postural compensation related to sensory input. This course will educate the dysphagia clinician on the therapeutic benefit of taping to improve motor patterns and facilitate a client's functional independence. Though focused on the adult population, experienced pediatric clinicians can easily apply these techniques to the pediatric population. This course will be heavy in labs where participants will gain the confidence, they need to be successful.

Please wear lab attire that allows for access to the shoulder and between the scapula (e.g. loose fitting t-shirt, tank top etc.)

Appropriate Disciplines: SLP/SLPAs, OT/COTAs
Course Level: Intermediate
Assessment Methods: Hands-on labs, Q&A, Self-Assessment on Evaluation

NOTE: Participants who are attending this course on tour:

  • Will receive 1:1 time with the instructor while practicing taping techniques at a course on tour.
  • Taping supplies for live, in-person attendees have been generously donated by StrengthTape

NOTE: Participants who are joining the Live Streaming event (and not a part of our live studio audience) should have the following available:

  1. Alcohol prep pads (3-5) to clean the skin contact area
  2. Pair of scissors.
  3. Kinesiology tape (full roll if you have it; minimum 6 feet, any brand will work). This can be purchased at a drugstore or ask your Physical Therapy Dept to borrow some. The instructor will show how to cut for each lab practice.
  4. Lab partner We highly encourage you to have a lab partner available (friend or family member). One lab involves taping the scapula which is hard to do on yourself.

    "John was an excellent instructor."

    - Cedar Knolls, NJ / Mar 2024

"Very informative course. Reminds me to review anatomy and physiology. "

    - Miami, FL / Feb 2024

"Include a section that talks specifically about the literature support of improved swallowing via use of kinesiology. "

    - Miami, FL / Feb 2024

"John was great! It's awesome being able to think from a PT perspective"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Feb 2024

"John Kelly is an excellent clinician and teacher. I enjoy his courses!! Thank you"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2023

"So glad I attended! KT taping techniques and information was invaluable!!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2023

"Obvious that speaker is knowledgeable and passionate about his profession. His knowledge of swallowing was impressive. My challenge was following the lecture, especially at the beginning; skipping around the handout (which was a thorough document) was confusing. This was my first exposure to the topic so I could have used up close visuals of how he was cutting the tape, identify the page number rather than holding up the handout. Minor concerns but there was so much knowledge form the speaker and professionalism form the company that these concerns were in contrast to the the other aspects observed. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2023

"John was really great. I felt like he was very clear with his teaching and answered my questions. Thank you so much. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2023

"John is so knowledgeable! This content was amazing and extremely informative and educational. I took the course because I have been out of clinical for a while and had never heard of taping for treating impairments. I found it completely fascinating! I will say the first 90 minutes were at times hard to follow. We seemed to jump around a lot, and I struggled to find the illustrations to go with the education. It also took a bit of time to get into the content. But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this and would attend another session by John. He's brilliant!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2023

"Very interesting and well presented. I work with paediatrics, so I am looking forward to following your paediatric course on this subject."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2023

"Thank you, excellent course. Perhaps a refresher or update course in the future would also be beneficial."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2023

"I think a few application videos that are available to watch (and even beyond the two weeks!) of patients with specific impairments would be so beneficial! I can apply tape to my partner during the course to learn... but I would love to see the actual taping and treatment sessions of those with specific impairments, those with a hemiparesis or facial droop, those with no epiglottic inversion, those with a trach, elderly patients while in-patient or swing bed care, those with postural deficits, etc. This course information is so motivating but also so complex. My brain is exploding with all I do not know/remember (and I have been an SLP for 20 plus years). I cannot wait to add taping to my treatment POC, but I don't know that I am comfortable yet. Specific videos with documentation of theory, anatomy, deficit, and treatment would be so helpful. I understand not all treatment and taping would be the same for a specific deficit...but at least it's a reminder, a place to start. (Hopefully I am making sense, again, brain is exploding. I wish I were as smart as John!)"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2023

    "John Kelly is wonderful!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2023

"great course. It would be more beneficial if it was in person. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2023

    "Great course"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2023

"This is my second course I've taken with John Kelly. He does a great job at explaining as he goes, and I really appreciate the course manuals and handouts."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2023

"I will start to practice swallowing therapy this method."

    - Istanbul, NSW / Jan 2023

    "Dr. John was amazingly helpful."

    - Istanbul, NSW / Jan 2023

"All the information seemed to be there; the only issue I had was difficulty following his explanations. It was nothing against the presenter. I think he just had a different perspective of knowledge regarding patient population and the examples he used to compare were all PT related. Being an SLP in strictly the pediatric population, and NO background with kinesiology tape/its uses in the PT world, this was difficult to follow. He seemed very open to answering questions and sharing his knowledge though!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2022

"The course information was great. It was difficult to follow some of the content, especially in the first half of the course. SLPs and PTs use different lingo, so I was busy trying to translate terms and then would miss the next section. The second half of the course was great! Thank you! "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2022

"Great course!! This was a day well spent. I appreciate your extensive knowledge and your willingness to share it."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2022

"This is a great course as a follow up from myofascial course. I can see where i can implement in my current treatment plans. Thank you "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2022

"presented was undoubtedly knowledgeable on subject. Videos of sequential taping presenter practiced with patients will visible outcomes would have been more effective."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2022

"Extremely knowledgeable & great examples using real case studies. Appreciated the hands-on component for practice of new skills. 10/10 Recommend!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2022

"Thoroughly enjoyed the knowledge and presentation! "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2022

"excellent course; streaming was poor on my end which makes following course difficult. Lots of freezing skipping etc. I will try to rewatch. It would be beneficial to be able to receive a recording, as it will be difficult to rewatch the entire course within 2 weeks, given vocational and avocational demands. But I did love the course. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2022

    "Thank you"

    - Phoenix, AZ / Mar 2022

"Thank you for coming to Phoenix!"

    - Phoenix, AZ / Mar 2022

"Thank you! Very interesting and helping!"

    - Newark, NJ / Jul 2021

"What a wealth of information, he covered everything. I can't think of anything more that I would have liked him to cover."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

"Many thanks from the UK! :)"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

"I enjoyed the tips and suggestions for cotreating when treating a patient with dysphagia. I found it very interesting connecting a patient's PT goals with ST goals to achieve the most functional outcome. Thank you for such an informative course! "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

"Very valuable course. Thank you, John!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

"Excellent information! A lot to digest!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2021

"great to hear the rationale for direction of massage / stretch and taping. i've had two female pts lament about the possibility of incurring wrinkles with the direction of facial and neck muscle elongation (downward at times rather than upward only).. as long as they understand why i'm "pulling "the direction that i am, the more they can relax and trust we're doing good."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2021

"Thank you so much for hosting this! I'm thrilled to practice this and apply it in my interventions. I finally feel like I have another tool in my toolbox to use in dysphagia that approaches things from a different, underestimated, yet vital angle."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2021

"This was an excellent course that will definitely help me in treatment with my patients. Thank you!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"Great content and fantastic presenter. I would most definitely take another course from him. He did an excellent job explaining everything and taking time to answer questions."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"LOVED this course! This material is so hard to come by so thank you for sharing your knowledge! "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"By far one of my favorite courses!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"John was amazing and explains thoughts from a PT/Holistic approach. "

    - Dallas, TX / Dec 2020

"John is very knowledgeable. I took his manual tx course before which was amazing. I felt that this more scattered & harder to follow in the morning but afternoon was much more structured and helpful. "

    - Dallas, TX / Dec 2020

"This class was sooo interesting. I did get lost a few times. I realize I may need to get a 3D model and review and practice this information. He did make me feel better after saying there really isn't a wrong way to do it. I really would love to take his myofascial course eventually."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2020

"Overall the speaker had excellent knowledge of the subject and was able to demonstrate techniques effectively but the beginning of the presentation was difficult to follow. I learned a lot today."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2020

"John was the instructor for both the NMES and Myofasical Release training that I completed. He never disappoints!! Great instructor! Did miss the hands on interaction. Hard to judge tension when you don't know if what your doing is correct. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2020

"The labs were very rushed as he probably had a hard time knowing how much time we needed to perform each taping technique. Perhaps more frequent, shorter breaks would have been good as it is hard to sit and look at a computer screen for several hours at a time. Overall a great course! I am never disappointed by John's classes!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2020

"I have really benefitted from Johns courses, including both the Myofascial and Kinesiotaping courses. At times, John can be a bit tangential with all the information he has to offer. The information could be presented in a bit more succinct fashion, but otherwise no complaints!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2020

"Thank you so much for this course. It was fantastic! Would love to take Myofascial Release course but prohibited from travel. Let me know if it goes live online!!!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2020

"I really like the Live Stream format. I attended the in-person Myofascial Release course in Indianapolis last March (2019) & as much as I enjoyed the in-person experience, the extra costs of flying across the country were a strain. Those costs would have been prohibitive this year, even if large gathering were still advisable."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2020

"Thank you for offering this as a live stream option during COVID-19! Great course!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"I appreciate the opportunity for live streaming during this unprecedented time. I look forward to receiving the supplemental materials that will be sent by John. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"Thank you so much John Kelly! I have never been disappointed in your seminars. I always leave your instruction feeling enlightened and refreshed with additional clinical skills . You did a good job with the livestream. I think this was a great livestream if you already had taken the manual myofascial tech lab. I saw a lot of questions regarding the manual techniques . I think it was overwhelming for some participants based on questions during the feed. That lab's base knowledge made a huge difference in my understanding John's relevance to the taping applications. Great Course!!! "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"great course even from afar. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"John, you did an excellent job! "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"Great course! And affordable too. The only other option I knew about through a different company was going to cost upwards of $3,000!! So excited to take it here instead, and with John. He's extremely knowledgeable and relatable, and answers questions well. I love the link between how a PT looks at things and how SLPs should be looking too. Thanks for bringing us closer to the level of our PT/OT colleagues. I learned so much and can't wait to start taping my patients! Labs were a little hard to see on livestream, I think because of camera angles. If the camera could be mobile and shoot different angles that might help. I took John's myofunctional release course and I think that should be a prerequisite to this course, then less time could be spent on MFR information and more time delving in to case studies. Using case studies to figure out where to tape would be really helpful. So glad you developed this course!!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"The knowledge this presenter portrayed was phenomenal, I will be registering for another! "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"GREAT course. I have attended the VitalStim certification, Myofascial Release and now this course with John. What a GREAT presenter. Thanks. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"It was very nice to see John again. I met him when he come to Turkey. Was looking forward to be able to attend to this course."

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"Only recommendation is to include if a partner is needed at home. I had tape and scissors ready for the online course, but didn't see anywhere to have a partner ready. I know this is usually completed in person and a last switch to live streaming, which was awesome, but I would have talked my partner into working from home today had I known. "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"Obviously would have loved to take this class in person, but grateful for the option to learn from home!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"Great course - I have wanted to take the myofascial release course for years but it hasn't come close enough yet. Thank you!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

"Online this was difficult, but manageable "

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2020

    "GREAT COURSE!"

    - Tampa, FL / Feb 2020

"John was a very well informed instructor. He did an outstanding job at providing a knowledge base and then putting it into real applications."

    - Tampa, FL / Feb 2020

"The information provided was very thorough. I enjoyed the ability to immediately practice the taping techniques with colleagues. Also enjoyed that many of the techniques can also be applied in pediatrics."

    - Tampa, FL / Feb 2020

"Enjoyed the course-hope to take his other courses!"

    - Dallas, TX / Dec 2019

"Fabulous- seriously amazing. Thank you!! SLPs need to use this modality! So excited to go back to work and implement my newly acquired knowledge. "

    - Dallas, TX / Dec 2019

"I feel this course should be marked intermediate VS intro as there is a lot of A+P and general dysphagia knowledge that is assumed with this course presentation. "

    - Dallas, TX / Dec 2019

"Great course, even if you are not as familiar with anatomy-learned a lot! Would be beneficial to have a peds specific course for taping. "

    - Chicago, IL / Aug 2019

"With an uninitiated audience, I would have started with an explanation of taping. However, the presentation was excellent. "

    - Chicago, IL / Aug 2019

"Thank you for designing this course! This is going to benefit my patients so much and fit right in my speech tool box. Cant wait to see what's next :)"

    - Chicago, IL / Aug 2019

"Great course, but I don't feel like I had the base knowledge to understand some of the instruction. Presenter was great about answering questions as needed."

    - Chicago, IL / Aug 2019
