This introductory level course will utilize lecture, video and hands-on lab sessions to teach participants in this course therapeutic techniques and interventions to help the young child (birth to 3 years) with hypotonia, regardless of the cause, through the developmental stages from supine to standing. This course will be based on NDT and SI principles to facilitate functional skills including gross motor, fine motor and postural control. By considering the internal and external factors which can impact arousal, posture and functional skills, participants will help young children achieve their highest functional level. Although this course will focus on gross motor development for PT's, OT's and SLP's will learn the importance of postural control and strength for respiration, body awareness and fine motor skills. Additionally, the inclusion of sensory information will benefit all disciplines (including ITDS's and teachers) toward the goal of maximizing a child's learning and function.

Appropriate Disciplines: OT/COTA, PT/PTA, SLP/SLPA
Course Level: Introductory
Assessment Methods: Q&A and Self-Assessment on Evaluation Form

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define and explain primary and secondary impairments related to low muscle tone and its implication on development for young children
  • Define different types of muscle contractions and the significance of each in young children with hypotonia
  • Understand the importance of the “preparation” phase prior to handling
  • Provide environmental adaptations to ensure the success of the young child during functional activities
  • Demonstrate handling techniques to promote postural control and transitional movements
