Facial palsy brings about psychosocial and musculoskeletal challenges which have a significant impact on communication and bolus management. A diagnoses familiar to the rehabilitation clinician, there remains limited access to education and therapeutic applications for the re-education of the neuromuscular system. In this course, the instructor will guide participants through a variety of treatment options including myofascial release, kinesiology taping and biofeedback. Etiologies of facial palsy such as, Bell's, Ramsey Hunt, Myasthenia Gravis, stroke and more will be discussed. This course will discuss strategies that offer muscular inhibition in synkinesis and craniomandibular spasticity, muscular recruitment for orofacial control. Course instruction will demonstrate approaches to minimize headaches, jaw pain and cervical pain as a result of postural compensations of the jaw and poor breath patterns. Laboratories will broaden your therapeutic toolbox to improve patient outcomes with evidence-based approach to exercise, sEMG use, Myofascial Release and kinesiology taping. John Kelly is a one-of-a-kind instructor who is helping to redefine the medical practice of Speech Language Pathology and interdisciplinary rehabilitation providers.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify anatomic structure and physiology pertaining to CN VII and orofacial myofascia
  • Define pathophysiology of Bell’s Palsy, Myasthenia Gravis, Multiple Sclerosis
  • Describe kinematic consequence of muscular and soft tissue dysfunction with their effects on functional activity
  • Relate postural impairment and basic craniomandibular dysfunction to mastication, bolus management
  • Define an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation in the management of facial palsy
  • Outline Safety First, protection and patient education to minimize further complication
  • Discuss precautions and contraindications with therapeutic intervention, manual therapy and electrical stimulation
  • Select evaluations and measurements for the assessment of facial palsy and treatment outcomes
  • Identify a proper treatment approach and therapeutic techniques through selected case studies based on evaluation findings; manual therapy, kinesiology taping, exercise, sEMG and home exercise progression
  • Identify interdisciplinary roles for facial palsy rehabilitation

"Great review of facial anatomy "

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2022

"I took the Kinesiotaping class last year and have used this a fair amount in inpatient rehab. This course was a good refresher for taping, and provided new material specific to facial palsy. Thank you, John, for another excellent class!"

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2022

"Love this course. The information was both foundational for overall learning, but also useful in direct care!"

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2022

"I really enjoyed the lecture. However, I did feel very disjointed when it came to the test. I tried to recall and look back at my notes for information surrounding the answers. However, I felt some of the answers were not very clear in looking back at the materials. :-( Overall, I enjoyed the class. "

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

"John did an awesome job of presenting the information in an organized manner and the demonstrations were very beneficial."

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

" I so very much appreciate John Kelly continuing to share his expertise in new and evolving ways! I utilize manual treatment techniques learned in his previous classes with my HNC population and look forward to incorporating this new material. Medical SLP's have so much to learn from John Kelly's thorough, multi-faceted, wholistic approach to treatment of this population! Thank you, John for helping us pave the way. Carol Lynn from Saint Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI"

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

"Taping techniques were awesome!"

- Houston, TX / May 2021

"Great presentation, very informative!"

- Houston, TX / May 2021

"I honestly feel that this is the best course I've taken in my 11 years of practice. I enjoyed the format, information was over a topic I knew little about, and I came out of this actually energized to treat a group of patients I typically avoid. "

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"I thought the Livestreaming was an effective way to present this material."

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"Great course, thank you!"

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"Excellent presentation, easy flow with instruction, great handout (a larger font would be great, but...) & and enjoyable experience to participate in!! Thanks so much! Plan to look into the other taping course I missed!! "

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"Mr. Kelly was professional and pleasant. However, I found his lecture style to be a bit hard to follow and disorganized. "

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2021

"Excellent course and presenter"

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2020

"I've been passionate about treating this population for the past 15 years, even starting and facilitating a support group. Patients have travelled to Ohio for treatment from Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and all over Ohio. During these years there has been almost no one using all these modalities and it is a thrill to see this happening now, and to see more evidence based studies for approaches that have worked for my patients. John, I am sidetracked now by COVID, unable to work (I have Myeloma) but as soon as my doc clears me (? a vaccine?) I hope to be working, especially to care for this underserved patient population. I look forward to communicating with you in the future. Thanks for the teaching and validation of these modalities! Marilyn Crossley, M.A. CCC-SLP"

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2020

"Thank you for offering this course! This is an area that doesn't get a lot of attention and I am grateful for the information provided so I can better serve this population!"

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2020

"Have a stronger knowledge of efficacy of how and when to intervene. "

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2020

"I thoroughly enjoyed this course. I cannot believe that I sustained attention for 8 hours, but that is a testament to the presenter. I learned so much! My feedback would be to strongly encourage participants to wait for responses to their questions until the end. I felt as though every time John was on a roll on a topic he was interrupted by an irrelevant question. "

- Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2020

"My third course taken with John and they always leave me wanting to learn more!"
