Pediatric Feeding Disorder is a new diagnosis that not only encompasses dysphagia, but also dysfunction in medical, nutritional, psychological, and/or feeding skills domains (Goday et al., 2019). As SLPs and OTs, it's important that we have the skills to assess and treat infants with feeding challenges adequately. This course will discuss the comorbidities of PFD, the four domains associated with this diagnosis, as well as safe, efficient, and effective feeding skills to use with infants.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Categorize common contributors of Pediatric Feeding Disorders (PFD) in infants within the four different domains.
  • Describe the rationale for high calorie or fortification if necessary.
  • Identify social determinants of health areas negatively impacted in families with PFD.
  • List skilled intervention strategies that can be utilized to support attachment when working with families and infant dyads.
  • Evaluate distress cues of infant feeding as well as determine the suck swallow-breath ratio pattern as typical or atypical for infants.
  • Describe how positioning change during infant bottle and breast presentations can support safe feeding practices and decrease distress cues.
  • Identify skilled intervention strategies that can be made in real-time to improve the efficiency of an infant's feeding.
  • Select an appropriate assessment tools or screening measures based on concerns and the infant's age.

Amanda Graves

Amanda Graves, M.S. CCC-SLP, CLC is a Speech Clinical Manager and feeding mentor in Lubbock, Texas. Amanda graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a master’s degree in communication disorders in 2007 and is a doctoral candidate at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions with graduation pending December 2023. Amanda has 16 years of experience in pediatrics with the last 12 years specifically in pediatric feeding. She is certified as a lactation counselor and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation provider and has completed training programs for kinesio-taping for dysphagia, SOS approach, Supporting Oral Feeding in Fragile Infants (SOFFI), myofascial release, and orofacial and myofunctional therapy. Providing quality education for pediatric feeding, specifically to therapists with limited access to mentoring support, became Amanda’s passion after moving from a large urban area to rural Texas. After seeing the difference in the care that her own premature daughter received and the lack of learning opportunities for these therapists, Amanda began helping her community by providing education and mentorship to therapists that lacked this support. Amanda guest lectures at Texas Tech University Health Science Center and has presented at both local and state conferences as well. When not having a meal with her patients in therapy, Amanda can be found celebrating the day with coffee or queso surrounded by friends or her husband and three children.
Financial Disclosure: Amanda Graves receives honoraria from CIAO Seminars for the presentation of this course.
