Course Description

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply Patient-Client Management Model and Dietz model for cancer rehabilitation within class room, case-based scenarios to manage individuals affected by breast cancer across the cancer continuum, incorporating key principles of cancer rehabilitati
  • Using the key principles of cancer rehabilitation, construct an examination, evaluation and patient-centered care plan that establishes rehabilitation goals and includes interventions consistent with the Dietz model for people affected by breast ca
  • Choose appropriate education intervention & communication for with people affected by breast cancer and their caregivers based upon where they are along the cancer care continuum and effectively communicate as a written goal.
  • Choose additional resources to help support patient needs across the continuum.

Sruti Manvi

PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, CLT

Sruti graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India in 1997. She completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from The University of Saint Augustine Florida in 2008. Sruti has been practicing for 18 years, and her areas of interest include: Orthopedic Manual Therapy, Oncology Rehabilitation, craniofacial pain for cervicogenic headaches, and management of TMJ. She is a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist, Certified Lymphedema Therapist, and a Certified Manual Therapist. She is involved in the mentoring program for the Women’s Health Residency for Oncology and Lymphedema and serves as an instructor for the pre-op breast surgery class for patients scheduled to have a lumpectomy or mastectomies. She is also involved in the mentorship of clinicians interested in Orthopedic Manual Therapy.


Alaina Newell

PT, DPT

Alaina Newell, PT, DPT
Alaina received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from University of Pittsburgh and completed her Women's Health Residency at UPMC in Pittsburgh. She is dual ABPTS Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Oncologic and Women's Health physical therapy and is a LANA Certified Lymphedema Therapist. Following residency, she moved to Denver, CO where she focused on outpatient oncology and women's health though has experience in acute care and home health physical therapy as well. Alaina has a passion to approach to each patient’s individual needs and desires to improve their daily function and quality of life. She currently performs this through mentoring, educating, and directing oncological rehabilitation as the Director of Education for ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation and adjunct faculty at Andrews University. She integrates her understanding of the foundational understanding of the neuromuscular, integumentary, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular systems with her advanced training in the gastrointestinal and urogynecological systems to approach best practices in patient care and outcomes.


Melissa Thess

PT, CLT

Melissa attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL and received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 2001. She has spent the majority of her career in outpatient orthopedics. Melissa joined Select Medical under the SSM Physical Therapy brand in June 2012. Melissa works in St. Louis, MO as SSM Physical Therapy’s Cancer Rehab Program Manager and was also recently promoted to the Director of Education and Quality for the ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Program.
Melissa has been treating lymphedema patients since 2006 and completed the program to become a Certified Lymphedema Therapist through Klose Training in 2010. During that time, she has worked with multiple oncologists throughout the St. Louis Metro region and co-created lymphedema programs for various local clinics. In July 2013, Melissa became an oncology clinical champion, working to create and market SSM Physical Therapy’s Cancer Rehabilitation program. The program was a great success and led to her becoming the Cancer Rehabilitation Program Manager in May 2015.
Melissa joined the faculty for Select Medical’s continuing education department in Oct 2015, co-developing and delivering an upper extremity lymphedema course for Select employees. Since then, she has created and delivered multiple live courses and webinars in the area of cancer rehab.
Melissa has been married for nine years to her wonderful husband Steve. They are active in triathlon and running, having completed their first half Ironman in 2015. They will be completing their first full Ironman in November 2016. Melissa and her husband have two furry children and also enjoy sports, travel and spending time with family and friends.


Audrey Stockwell

PT, DPT, OCS, CLT

Audrey received her Masters and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Northwestern University in 2001. Audrey has been working for Select Physical Therapy in various markets since 2002 and has worked for Kentucky Orthopedic Rehab Team since 2009. She currently manages the KORT Highlands Clinic and is the Cancer Rehabilitation Director for KORT. She is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Specialist and a Certified Lymphedema Therapist.


Tiffany Kendig

PT, DPT, MPH, CLT

Tiffany Kendig, PT, DPT, MPH, CLT is a Physical Therapist with experience providing therapy services to clients with a variety of diagnoses in the acute care, acute rehabilitation and outpatient settings. She completed undergraduate and graduate studies in Physical Therapy at Boston University, and is also a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Public Health. She joined the rehabilitation team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in 2007 practicing in acute care, then as a Clinical Specialist in Neurology in the outpatient setting. Ms. Kendig is currently a Supervisor with MSK’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Service, and has a special interest in oncology rehabilitation as well as maximizing function and quality of life in persons with neurologic, vestibular or balance impairments. Ms. Kendig is the acting Membership Chair for the Oncology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association.


Timothy Marshall

Ph.D., M.S., ACSM/ACS-CET

Timothy F. Marshall earned his PhD in Health Science, specializing in Movement Science, from Seton Hall University. Tim also earned a Master’s of Science in Exercise Science degree from Kean University and is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine as a Cancer Exercise specialist.
Dr. Marshall is an Assistant Professor in the School of Physical Therapy at Kean University and is the cardiovascular curriculum coordinator for the program. Dr. Marshall's research interests are grounded in reducing emotional, physical, and functional impairments from cancer. Dr. Marshall's overarching research goal is to advance cancer rehabilitation research and promote research collaboration in order to ultimately contribute to improved care and translate population-based research into patient-centered evidence-based interventions that are integrated into the continuum of care in order to prevent cancer-related disability and empower cancer survivors. Currently, Dr. Marshall is conducting research aimed at understanding the impact the presence of chemotherapy-induced-peripheral-neuropathy has on gait, fall risk, and muscle activation by using wireless gait analysis and EMG technology.


Jessica Bertram

PT, DPT, CLT

Jessica graduated with a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from University of Missouri in 2006. She completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Marymount University in 2009. She has been practicing for 12 years, and her areas of interest include: Women/ Men’s Health, Oncology Rehabilitation, and Lymphedema Therapy. She completed her Certification in Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy in 2008 and attended the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy to become a Certified Lymphedema Therapist in 2008. Jessica is the Director for the Oncology Residency Program at Baylor Scott and White Institute for Rehabilitation and serves as an instructor for the pre-op breast surgery class for patients scheduled to have a lumpectomy or mastectomies. She also completed training and was certified through Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation in 2010.


Mackenzi Pergolotti

PhD, OTR/L

Dr. Mackenzi Pergolotti is an assistant professor of occupational therapy at Colorado State University. As an occupational therapist, Dr. Pergolotti worked at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) developing programs aimed to better address the needs of multiple populations. Realizing the impact of cancer rehabilitation provided at centers like MSKCC, she was driven to build the evidence-base and programs for cancer rehabilitation nation-wide.


Christy Thornton

OTR, CHT, CLT

Christy is an Occupational Therapist for Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Plano, Texas since 2014. Christy graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy in 2002. She later became a Certified Hand Therapist in 2007 and a Certified Lymphedema Therapist in 2013.
Christy is currently working in a multidisciplinary outpatient therapy center which treats approximately 3000+ visits per month. She specializes in orthopedic injuries, as well as lymphedema and oncology rehab. She practiced for 9 years at a Level 1 trauma center. There she focused on orthopedic injuries, burns, reconstructions and neurologic conditions. Christy is a strong team player and has had an integral role in the development of therapy protocols both past and present. Her current passion is oncology rehab where she uses her knowledge of orthopedic injuries to advance her skill set with post-oncology patients with and without lymphedema. Christy currently teaches the “Introduction to Evaluation and Exercise in Cancer Survivors” within the ReVital Oncology Rehab Program.
