Poor reading, poor handwriting, clumsiness…it all ends in a referral for the school-based therapist. But is it sensory? Behavior? ADHD? Dyslexia? Something else?? This course will teach the school-based therapist to recognize the signs of a vision-based learning problem, then assess the visual system to uncover the root cause of academic difficulty. The therapist will learn the best standardized assessments to capture the visual dysfunction and simple, inexpensive techniques to improve ocular motor skills to improve academic performance.

Suggested items to have on hand for the best course experience:

  1. A Brock String- This is a string, about 24-30 inches long, with 3 or 4 beads. This is used throughout the courses an intervention activity. They can also be found on Amazon by searching for brock string.
  2. A craft/popsicle stick- This will be used during the assessment process as a fixation stick. There are few choices available on Amazon as well found by searching for fixation stick.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe 3 behaviors observed in school setting that indicate a visual issue.
  • Recall the anatomy of the visual system from the eye through the cortex
  • Demonstrate appropriate technique for assessment and documentation of ocular motor skills
  • Describe the near vision focusing system
  • Select and utilize the appropriate objective assessment for the visual system
  • Demonstrate the ability to tell the refractive status of a student by looking at their glasses

  • Demonstrate techniques to improve letter reversals
  • Recall the most common visual diagnoses and their functional implications

    "Thank you!"

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / May 2023

"I have been so excited to take a course like this as I feel vision is impacting academic performance for many of the students on my caseload. This is not something taught in depth in an OT program and I feel many therapists struggle with tackling this as we are not confident in this area. Thank you for this information! I would also like to know what you feel is a contributing factor in vision deficits? Would removing screens and increasing outside time prevent many of these issues and would removing screens/increasing outside time naturally improve vision deficits for many students? Thank you!"
