Course Description

This introductory level two-day orthotic fabrication program combines didactic upper extremity orthotic principles with an on-site lab to fabricate custom upper extremity orthoses creating a unique educational experience. Participants will review basic concepts related to the clinical indications, anatomical landmarks, design and fabrication of commonly used custom upper extremity orthoses. Participants will gain an expanded understanding of how to address tendinopathy, arthritis, nerve compression, joint injuries and stiffness, fractures, and mallet finger. Through small group discussions, participants will have the opportunity to increase their clinical reasoning skills by discussing conditions and applications as they fabricate each orthosis. Participants will fabricate 10 orthoses in this two-day event.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the indications, precautions, and clinical implications associated with the use of static upper extremity orthoses.
  • dentify and appropriately apply knowledge of the anatomical landmarks in the fabrication of static upper extremity orthoses.
  • Identify mechanical principles used in upper extremity orthotic design and fabrication for immobilization of the upper extremity.
  • Apply knowledge of the properties of low temperature plastic materials to aid in material selection for specific goals related to upper extremity orthotic use.
  • Experience working with patterns and materials to complete the fabrication of static orthoses.
  • Understand and apply strapping to upper extremity orthoses and use concepts of surface area to distribute appropriate forces.
  • Develop clinical reasoning skills while discussing the conditions for each orthosis during fabrication of each orthosis.

Michael Staino

My clinical experiences span 24 years as an OT and 18 years as a CHT working in outpatient and physician-owned practices for NovaCare Rehabilitation in Southern NJ, Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California, and Kessler Institute in West Orange, NJ. The majority of my career is in orthopedic outpatient clinics, regional management, and clinical education. In 2014, I was one of the first occupational therapists in the country to complete an orthopaedic specialty in Certification Orthopaedic Manual Therapy through Select Medical Corporation for which I am now the national instructor of the wrist and hand module. I have taught college level courses focused on hand and upper extremity rehabilitation at UMDNJ and Elizabethtown College in 2009. In 2010, 2011, and 2013, I was the instructor for the elbow/wrist/hand anatomy and rehabilitation at Stockton University in the Occupational Therapy Program. In 2012, I was adjunct professor at Stockton College of New Jersey Occupational Therapy program teaching the hand therapy portion of the OT Practice course. For Select Medical Corporation, I have been on faculty for the past eight years teaching at national conferences. Topics include: athletic wrist injuries, clinical exam of wrist/elbow, orthosis management and design and the NJ modalities requirements for occupational therapists.
