Course Description

“Beyond Picky Eating” is clinically grounded course designed for speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists working with children and teens who present with hyper-selective eating patterns. While many feeding challenges are labeled as “picky eating,” this course goes deeper—guiding clinicians to identify and treat the root causes of selective eating, including anxiety, sensory sensitivities, rigidity, and learned feeding patterns. Participants will learn how to move beyond surface-level strategies and develop a more nuanced clinical lens. The course will explore how caregiver accommodations, often well-intentioned, can unintentionally maintain feeding difficulties-and how to shift these patterns in a supportive, practical way. Through real-world case examples, clinicians will see how to assess, conceptualize, and intervene with hyper-selective eaters across a range of presentations. Emphasis is placed on building sustainable, home-based change through caregiver coaching, low-pressure exposure, and individualized intervention planning. Clinicians will leave with practical tools, scripts, and frameworks to confidently support families, reduce mealtime stress, and expand a child’s dietary variety. A perfect course for clinicians ready to dive deeper into the world of picky eating.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between typical picky eating, hyper-selectivity, and more complex feeding presentations, and apply this understanding to clinical decision-making.
  • Identify and analyze the root causes of selective eating, including sensory processing differences, anxiety, rigidity, and environmental influences.
  • Recognize patterns of caregiver accommodation and explain how these patterns may maintain or reinforce feeding challenges.
  • Apply strategies to gently reduce accommodations while maintaining a supportive, therapeutic alliance with caregivers.
  • Employ strategies that target willingness to change and flexibility, including the use of mindfulness-based approaches to support reduced anxiety and increased participation with food.
  • Use effective coaching strategies and scripts to guide caregivers in responding to food refusal and mealtime challenges.
  • Apply clinical reasoning to case examples in order to assess, plan, and adapt interventions for hyper-selective eaters.

Kelly Komisaruk

M.Ed., CCC-SLP

Kelly Komisaruk, M.Ed. CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist specializing in feeding difficulties located in Florida. After gaining her education at Central Michigan University and The University of Virginia, she moved to Florida to pursue her career. After years of honing her skills working with children, she took on the challenge of being one of the initial therapists at Nemours Children’s Hospital in 2012. Always having a love of feeding, she was a founding member of the Nemours Childrens Hospital Outpatient and Inpatient Intensive Multidisciplinary Feeding Team helping to design and implement both programs. Today, after helping hundreds of children learn to love food, she is proud to offer her services both virtually and in person to the Central Florida area and beyond! She opened up her practice in Lake Nona in 2020 and has grown to offer feeding services to children, teens, and adults. She is about to open up her intensive brick and mortar feeding clinic in 2022 where she plans to expand the services she offers to families nationwide. She has specific interest in helping people with anxiety around food, food phobias, and helping other clinicians learn how to help others enjoy eating!
