Course Description

As medical technologies advance, more patients survive critical illnesses and injuries once considered beyond treatment. Early mobilization and effective rehab interventions play a crucial role in the recovery process for these patients. This course discusses numerous topics that are helpful for therapists working with medically complex patients including factors to consider prior to mobilization (i.e. vitals, lab values, lines), vent modes, disconnecting tubes, suctioning, and more. Several techniques for early, progressive mobilization will be taught by experienced therapists. The course discusses recent exciting technological advances in early mobilization rehabilitation such as the integration of partial-weight-bearing strength training using the dynamic tilt table. This technique allows weight-bearing exercise in a gravity-reduced environment for patients who require a graded transition from bedrest to supporting full body weight again. The course is packed with videotaped treatments and instructions for better understanding and is equally well suited for students and experienced therapists.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Verbalize the neurophysiological effects of prolonged immobility and their implications on treatment planning and delivery.
  • Discuss important factors to consider prior to engaging the patient in active mobilization.
  • Discuss and compare normal and abnormal neurophysiological responses to mobilization.
  • Discuss critical illness polyneuropathy.
  • Identify the various modes and alarms of mechanical ventilation.
  • Discuss suctioning patients on trach collars and mechanical ventilation.
  • Discuss the passy-muir speaking valve and implication for therapy.
  • Discuss portable telemetry.
  • Describe various techniques and strategies for early mobilization.
  • Explain the challenges of mobilizing medically complex patients.
  • Identify the indications and contraindications for partial weight-bearing (PWB) strength training.
  • Discuss the benefits of PWB strength training.
  • Discuss the graded mobilization algorithm.

Darin Trees

PT, DPT, CWS

Darin Trees, PT, DPT, CWS is a therapist, clinical instructor, and frequent guest lecturer on the topic of ICU rehabilitation. He has over 17 years of ICU rehab experience and a research interest in the early mobilization of medically complex patients. Dr. Trees has published in peer-reviewed professional literature and has presented at state, national, and international levels. He received the 2003 Outstanding Clinical Educator Award from the Texas Consortium and was recipient of the 2004 Mary Sinnott Award for Clinical Excellence in Acute Care from the Acute Care Section of the APTA.
