Course Description

Day 1
Oral Motor Exercises! Sensory Stimulation! E-Stim! Behavioral Programming! How does it all fit together? What does the SLP do? What does the OT do? How do you know when to use the different techniques out there? Should we combine approaches? How do you know where to start, when to “push”, and when to stop? Come learn the relationship between a child’s gross motor abilities and his feeding skills. Learn the three primary components of feeding disorders, Sensory/Motor/Behavioral and how to address them in a comprehensive treatment program. In this intermediate course, for SLP/SLPAs and OT/COTAs you will learn how to work together to evaluate and choose different techniques and modalities in light of the specific needs of the child and the knowledge-base, roles, and scope of each discipline. Stop trying to use someone else’s “cookbook” and develop a unique program appropriate for each client.

Day 2
In “Pediatric Feeding: The Big Picture”, we learned about the Motor, Sensory, and Behavioral causes of pediatric feeding disorders. In this advanced, follow-up course, using case studies and group discussion, OTs, PTs, SLPs and Dysphagia Professionals will delve into two more causes: Medical Problems and glitches in the Family Dynamics. Learn what you can and cannot do to help a child with severe gastrointestinal or cardiopulmonary problems eat. How does Prematurity contribute to feeding problems? Explore the effects of different medications on swallowing and why you should always know what meds your client is on. Discover some of the rarely explored effects on the family having a child with a feeding disorder and walk away with concrete ways to support and empower your families to help their child and themselves

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and compare the relationship between Gross Motor Development and Oral Motor/Feeding Development
  • Delineate different areas of responsibility and scope for SLP’s and OT’s
  • List the first three primary areas of concern in Pediatric Feeding Disorders.
  • Discuss the importance of addressing the sensory and motor components of the disorder before resorting to a strictly behavioral program.
  • Plan appropriate treatment approaches based on one or all three basic components of Feeding Disorder
  • Discuss various medical issues that also cause feeding disorders in children.
  • List 3 strategies that can be used in the treatment of children with GERD and Cardiac/Respiratory Issues.
  • List 4 family paradigms that might be in operation in client families.
  • Discuss current research (or lack of) i.e. N.E.R.D., pharmaceuticals, G.E.R.D., etc.
