Course Description

This intermediate level course is intended for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other professionals interested in treatment of young children with cleft palate. Many SLPs have not had specific course work in this area, yet 68% of children with cleft palate require speech-language intervention. The assessment and intervention techniques discussed as part of this presentation should improve the speech and language services provided to this population of children.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the speech and language characteristics of young children with cleft palate
  • Conduct an assessment of a young child with cleft palate
  • Describe different profiles of performance for children with cleft palate
  • Describe evidence-based intervention approaches for young children with cleft palate

Dr. Kathy Chapman

Dr. Kathy Chapman is a Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. Her recent research has focused on young children with cleft palate. Dr. Chapman has numerous data-based articles and national and international presentations related to this areas of study. She is a coordinator for the Americleft speech project, which is an intercenter study of speech outcomes in the USA. She was recently awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health (National Institute on Dental and Craniofacial Research) to fund this project. Dr. Chapman (with Dr. Mary Hardin-Jones) was funded by the National Institutes of Health (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders) to conduct a multicenter study, longitudinal study of phonological development of young children with cleft palate. She has served on numerous editorial boards and was Associate Editor for the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology and Language, Speech, Hearing Services in Schools. Dr. Chapman is a fellow of the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
