Can a child with a trach eat by mouth? Is a G-tube really the “End of the Road” for Feeding? Can a Rehab therapist use a stethoscope? Anatomy is the foundation for all we do. Get back to the basics with our most complicated patients. Study anatomy in a fun, hands-on way and apply techniques that will help your medically-challenging patients learn to eat. This highly interactive workshop for OT/COTA, PT/PTAs and SLP/SLPAs encourages participants to draw from their own experiences and caseloads for group problem-solving and discussion. NOTE: Participants should bring; red, orange, blue, green, purple and black markers, scissors, a glue stick, and a small mirror for labs
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- List the primary muscle groups and their functions involved in swallowing and demonstrate specific techniques to aid in strengthening each group.
- Discuss the effects of prolonged tube-feeding on development and the goals and methods of therapeutic intervention.
- List effects on feeding caused by the tracheostomy and discuss the preferred positioning and handling techniques used with infants with tracheostomies.
- Explain the principles of pulmonary auscultation and demonstrate basic techniques used in dysphagia therapy.

Jennifer Meyer, M.A. CCC-SLP has over 20 years experience specializing in pediatric oral motor, speech, and feeding disorders. She is a popular national speaker and has received exceptional ratings for her courses. Jennifer has worked in many Neonatal Intensive Care Units, developed an outpatient hospital-based feeding program and served as an Oral Motor/ Feeding Consultant for Early Childhood Intervention Programs. In her role as Assistant Clinical Professor at Texas Woman’s University she taught Neurology, Language Development, and Dysphagia courses both on campus and online. She developed and served as the Clinical Coordinator of the Center for Assisting Families with Feeding and Eating (CAFFE). She is currently consulting with several Home Health companies in the Dallas-Ft., Worth area, including mentoring more than 150 therapists and assisting in the development of a High-Risk Infant program.
