Course Description

Challenging caseloads requires multi-discipline interaction and a skilled treatment methodology. This course is designed to introduce the rehabilitation specialist to treatment techniques appropriate for soft tissue restrictions that contribute to dysfunctional movement patterns in neurological diagnoses. Individual lectures review involved muscular and fascial anatomy tying biomechanics and kinesiology into specific soft tissue mobilization techniques appropriate to improving functional independence. Case studies are designed to correlate common functional symptoms that contribute to clinical impairments and exemplify the application of suggested manual techniques. The emphasis of this practical seminar is placed on the relationship of soft tissue restrictions to functional impairment whereby applying theory to practical intervention with manual therapy adds a whole new dimension to patient care.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Review basic anatomic structure and physiology pertaining to myofascia and specific to bolus progression in deglutition.
  • Describe consequences of muscular and soft tissue dysfunction and their effects on functional activity.
  • Discuss core activation, identify postural complications and mobility deficits as they relate to an interdisciplinary approach to dysphagia.
  • Comprehensive discussion of the kinesiology of swallowing and relate fascial impairments to compensation in successful, functional movement.
  • Demonstrate advanced palpation skills of the head and neck.
  • Demonstrate basic soft tissue mobilization skills for the anterior cervical, rib cage, scapula/upper extremity in preparation for functional, muscular recruitment.
  • Describe basic structure and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint with specific application to trismus and mastication
  • Multidiscipline, costal/thoracic segment focus for improved postural stability and respiration in bolus management
  • Discuss the indications, precautions and contraindications for myofascial mobilization.
  • Identify a proper treatment approach utilizing manual techniques through case study based on significant evaluation findings.
  • Identify and relate the significance of myofascial pain in trigger points to deglutition and apply specific manual techniques in approach to treatment
  • Discuss appropriate documentation and reimbursement issues

A graduate of the University of St. Augustine’s graduate Physical Therapy Program. John has over 17 years’ experience with acute inpatient and hospital-based outpatient rehabilitation and currently an outpatient clinical director for Siskin Rehabilitation Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. John continues to balance full time patient care with administrative responsibilities. John is NDT certified and an experienced manual orthopedic therapist working toward his clinical doctorate and manual therapy certification. John is a certified VitalStim® Instructor and has taught orthopaedic and electrotherapy courses across the country.
