According to recent AAP publications, up to 50% of typically developing children and up to 80% of those children with developmental disabilities have feeding problems. With these staggering numbers, it is important to understand the underlying factors of infant and pediatric feeding and swallowing challenges. With the current trends in research highlighting the short term and long term effects of trauma, educating parents/caregivers on strategies to mitigate their infant/child’s physiological and physical stress has never been more important. By implementing body work interventions, we aim to support the brain/body connection and help infants and children, birth-3 with any feeding and swallowing challenges they may have. Feeding delays are often multifaceted with a combination of medical, sensory, behavioral and environmental factors. Feeding difficulties can start in the NICU, and sometimes it's later in childhood. Children with feeding difficulties are best served by an interdisciplinary team including nurses, physicians, registered dietitians, feeding therapist (OT and/or SLP), and physical therapist. The use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been combined with traditional therapies when patients struggle with dysphagia relating to sensory and/or motor difficulties. The use with adults has grown to be quite common and the use in the pediatric arena has also grown dramatically. This short course will cover 2 case studies (1 infant and 1 toddler) to demonstrate appropriate case analysis, decisions of candidacy as well as electrode placement and addition of traditional therapies to complement its use.
